Groundworks Project – Birmingham

Project Overview

TR Civil Engineering Central & Southern Ltd was appointed to deliver a comprehensive groundworks package for a large-scale residential development in Birmingham. The project encompassed key components including Roads and Sewers, Foundations, Retaining Walls, and External Finishing Works.

This strategically located site required a coordinated approach to ensure compliance with local authority standards and the client’s tight schedule for phased handovers.

Scope of Works

Roads and Sewers

Installation of over 1.5km of adoptable roads and associated infrastructure.

Deep drainage works including foul and storm systems, manholes, and interceptors.

Liaison with local authorities for Section 38 and Section 104 adoption processes.

Foundations

Excavation and pouring of traditional strip foundations and reinforced pads for over 50 residential units.

Installation of ground beams and sub-structure brickwork.

Full site surveys to ensure level accuracy and structural compliance.

Retaining Walls

Design and construction of several retaining walls to accommodate the sloping nature of the site.

Installation of weep holes and land drainage to manage surface water behind structures.

External Finishing

Completion of kerbing, block paving, tarmac surfacing, footpaths, and driveways.

Topsoil and landscaping preparation across public and private areas.

Final connection of utilities and preparation for handover to the main contractor.

Key Challenges & Solutions

Ground Conditions:

Varying soil conditions required adaptive foundation designs and reinforced structures. Our in-house engineering team worked closely with geotechnical consultants to overcome these efficiently.

Logistical Coordination:

Operating within a live development site required meticulous planning and collaboration with other trades to avoid delays.

Adoption Standards:

All roads and drainage infrastructure were completed to adoption standard, including rigorous inspections and compliance testing.
